Yes — and it's the coverage most dog owners don't know they need.
Pet insurance covers your dog's health: the vet bill when something happens to your dog. It does not cover what your dog does to someone else. That's renters insurance, and the two aren't interchangeable.
If you insure your dog and not your apartment, you've covered the cheaper half.
How Does Renters Insurance Cover a Dog Bite?
Two separate ways, and they work differently.
Medical payments — up to $1,000 per person, no blame required. Nobody has to prove it was your fault. It exists so a neighbor's stitches get handled quickly instead of turning into an argument between two people who share a hallway.
Personal liability — $100,000 to $300,000 on our sample policies. If someone holds you responsible, this pays what you're legally liable for. And it pays for a lawyer to defend you even if the claim turns out to be groundless or false — that defense doesn't come out of your coverage limit.
That second one is the reason this matters. Dog bite claims in the US routinely land in five figures, and that's the bill that doesn't fit on a credit card.
Is My Dog Covered Away From My Apartment?
Yes. This is the part that isn't obvious.
The medical payments coverage applies off your property when the injury is caused by an animal owned by or in the care of an insured. The dog park, the sidewalk, a friend's backyard, someone walking past you on the street.
It follows the dog, not the address.
What a Pet Claim Actually Looks Like
The bite on a morning walk. Your dog lunges at someone passing on the sidewalk. They need stitches. Medical payments handles the ER visit without anyone deciding whose fault it was.
The bite at a dinner party. A guest reaches for your dog while he's eating. He bites. Weeks later there's a claim for the injury and lost work. That's liability, and that's where the lawyer matters.
The dog who scratched the neighbor's door. Damage to someone else's property is covered up to $500 per occurrence, at replacement cost. The neighbor's door, yes. Your own apartment's door, no — see below.
What Isn't Covered
If the dog bites you, or someone who lives in your household. Liability coverage is for injuries to other people, guests, neighbors, strangers. Your own family's medical bills go through health insurance. That's the main exclusion and it surprises people.
Damage your pet does to the apartment you rent. Chewed baseboards, scratched floors, a ruined carpet in your own unit. The coverage that pays for other people's property specifically excludes property rented to you, so that's between you and your security deposit. It's the most common pet claim people expect to be covered and it isn't.
Anything expected or intended. The policy is for accidents.
If It Happens
-
Get them medical attention first. Everything else waits.
-
Get their name and phone number, and the name of anyone who saw it.
-
Don't promise anything and don't offer to pay. Not because you did something wrong — because the policy is built to handle it, and an offer made in the moment can complicate the claim.

Many leases that allow dogs also ask the tenant to carry renters insurance with liability coverage, and some name a minimum amount. Read yours, if it names a number, check it against your policy before you sign.
Our sample policies carry $100,000 to $300,000 of liability. If your leasing office asks for proof, we can send it to them directly, in English or Spanish.
