What is a deductible in pet insurance?
A pet insurance deductible is the amount you pay for covered vet bills each policy year before your insurer starts reimbursing you. Once you meet it, reimbursement kicks in for the rest of the year.
Example: With a $200 deductible and a $1,000 vet bill, you pay the first $200, and the remaining $800 becomes eligible for reimbursement.
At Kanguro Insurance: Choose a deductible from $200 to $1,000. A higher deductible lowers your monthly premium.
What is a reimbursement rate?
The reimbursement rate is the percentage of a covered vet bill your insurer pays back after the deductible. Common options are 70%, 80%, and 90%.
Example: If $800 is eligible and your rate is 80%, you get $640 back.
At Kanguro Insurance: Reimbursement goes up to 90%.
What is a copay in pet insurance?
In pet insurance, the copay (or coinsurance) is the share of a covered bill you pay after the deductible. It's the flip side of your reimbursement rate: at 80% reimbursement, your copay is 20%.
Example: On $800 eligible at 80% reimbursement, your copay is $160.
What is an annual limit?
The annual limit is the maximum your insurer will reimburse in one policy year. After you reach it, any further vet bills that year are your responsibility until the policy renews.
At Kanguro Insurance: Annual limits go up to unlimited, so a big emergency doesn't cap your protection.
What is a pet insurance premium?
The premium is the price you pay each month or year to keep your policy active. It depends on your pet's species, breed, and age, your ZIP code, and the deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit you choose.
At Kanguro Insurance: Plans start at $30/month for dogs and $15/month for cats.
What is a waiting period in pet insurance?
A waiting period is the time between buying a policy and when coverage begins for certain conditions. Anything that starts during that window isn't covered, which is why it's smart to enroll before your pet needs care.
At Kanguro Insurance: Accidents have a 2-day waiting period, so coverage begins on day 3. Illnesses have a 14-day waiting period, so coverage begins on day 15. Early Years Care+ preventive benefits become active the following day.
What is a pre-existing condition?
A pre-existing condition is an illness or injury your pet had, or showed signs of, before coverage started or during the waiting period. Most pet insurers, including Kanguro, don't cover pre-existing conditions.
Tip: Insure your pet while they're young and healthy, before anything shows up in their medical records.
What does accident and illness coverage include?
Accident and illness coverage reimburses unexpected vet care: injuries like fractures, bite wounds, or swallowed objects, and illnesses like infections, allergies, diabetes, or cancer. It's the core of most pet insurance policies.

What is a pet wellness plan?
A wellness or preventive plan helps pay for routine care like vaccines, annual checkups, and flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. It's usually an add-on to an accident and illness policy, not insurance on its own.

Does pet insurance cover hereditary and congenital conditions?
Hereditary conditions are passed down genetically, while congenital conditions are present at birth. Examples include hip dysplasia and some heart conditions. Coverage varies by insurer, so check your policy before you buy.
What is a pet insurance claim?
A claim is your request for reimbursement after a vet visit. You submit the vet invoice and your pet's medical records, and the insurer reviews them against your policy.
At Kanguro Insurance: File from your phone in minutes. Claims are processed in under 3.5 business days on average.
What is direct pay in pet insurance?
Direct pay means your insurer pays the vet clinic directly, so you only cover your share instead of fronting the full bill and waiting for reimbursement.
At Kanguro Insurance: Direct Pay is available for claims over $900.
