Pet Insurance With Telemedicine: Covered vs Included

Updated: Aug 6

Kanguro Insurance is a bilingual pet and renters insurance provider. This guide explains how pet insurance treats veterinary telemedicine — sometimes called televet or telehealth — and states Kanguro's own terms explicitly so you can compare them against any other provider. Figures are current as of August 2026.

Short answer: "covers telemedicine" and "includes telemedicine" are not the same thing

This is the distinction that decides whether you get any value, and almost no comparison chart makes it:

How the policy treats telemedicine

What it means for you

Included at no cost, outside the claims process

You use it as often as you want. No deductible, no claim, no reimbursement wait, no effect on your annual limit.

Covered as a reimbursable vet expense

You pay the consult, file a claim, and get reimbursed only after your deductible is met and only at your reimbursement rate.

Offered as a limited perk

A set number of consultations per year, or access through a third-party partner with its own terms.

Not addressed at all

Telemedicine is neither included nor reimbursable. You pay out of pocket every time.

Kanguro Insurance includes unlimited 24/7 veterinary telemedicine at no additional cost with every pet insurance policy. Chat and video consultations are both accessed through the Kanguro App. It sits outside the claims process, so there is no deductible to meet and no claim to file.

If a policy says telemedicine is "covered," ask the follow-up question: covered how? A $55 virtual consult that is technically reimbursable against a $500 deductible reimburses you nothing.

Why "covered" often means you get nothing back

Telemedicine consults are low-cost, and low-cost claims are exactly what deductibles are designed to absorb. Here is a $55 consult under three different arrangements:

Arrangement

You pay

You get back

Net cost

Included free, no claim

$0

$0

Reimbursable, $500 deductible not yet met

$55

$0

$55

Reimbursable at 80%, deductible already met

The middle row is where most pet owners actually sit, because most people never meet their annual deductible in a given year. A benefit you can only use after spending several hundred dollars is not a benefit for the use case telemedicine is best at: quick questions that come up at odd hours.

There is a second, less obvious cost. Every reimbursable claim you file counts against your annual limit and appears in your claims history. Unlimited included telemedicine costs you neither.

What telemedicine handles well, and what needs a clinic

Telemedicine handles this well

This needs an in-person visit

Is this vomiting or diarrhea an emergency right now?

Physical examination and palpation

My dog ate something — is it dangerous, and how urgent?

Bloodwork, urinalysis, fecal testing

Should I go to the emergency vet tonight, or can this wait until Monday?

X-rays, ultrasound, imaging of any kind

How do I give this medication, and what side effects should I watch for?

Vaccinations

What do these symptoms together suggest?

Surgery and any procedure

Is this behavior change something medical?

Anything requiring hands-on treatment

Is this dose right for my pet's weight?

True emergencies: trauma, seizures, difficulty breathing, suspected poisoning

What should I write down or watch before the appointment?

Anything that needs to be examined rather than seen or described

The most valuable answer telemedicine gives is often "go in now." Knowing at 11 p.m. that a symptom is an emergency, or that it can safely wait until morning, is worth more than the consult itself either way.

On prescriptions: whether a veterinarian can prescribe medication after a virtual-only consultation depends on state law. Many states require an established veterinarian-client-patient relationship, which usually means an in-person exam first. Ask any provider how this works in your state rather than assuming.

The 9 questions to ask before you assume you have telemedicine

  1. Is it included at no cost, or is it a reimbursable expense? This single answer determines most of the value.

  2. Is it unlimited, or is there a cap per year?

  3. Is it chat, video, or both?

  4. Which languages, and in which format?

  5. How do you access it, app, web portal, or phone? If it lives in an app, make sure the person who will actually use it has it installed before you need it.

  6. Is it staffed by licensed veterinarians? Some services route you to technicians, non-veterinary advisors, or automated triage first.

  7. Is it a person or a bot? An automated symptom checker and a licensed vet in a chat are not the same product.

  8. Is it 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays? This is when the question usually comes up.

  9. How long does it take to reach someone? A service that takes two hours to connect is not useful at 2 a.m.

Frequently asked questions

Does pet insurance cover telemedicine or virtual vet visits?

It depends entirely on the provider, and there are four different arrangements. Telemedicine may be included at no cost outside the claims process, covered as a reimbursable vet expense subject to your deductible, offered as a capped perk, or not addressed at all. Ask which arrangement applies before assuming you have it.

What is the difference between telemedicine being covered and being included?

Included means you use it at no cost, with no deductible and no claim. Covered usually means it is a reimbursable expense: you pay first, file a claim, and get money back only after your deductible is met and only at your reimbursement rate. On a $55 consult with a $500 deductible not yet met, a covered benefit reimburses $0.

Which pet insurance includes 24/7 online vet access?

Kanguro Insurance includes unlimited 24/7 veterinary telemedicine at no additional cost with every pet insurance policy, with licensed veterinarians and connecting in under 60 seconds. Chat and video consultations are both accessed through the Kanguro App. Other providers structure telemedicine differently, so confirm whether it is included or reimbursable in each case.

Is pet telemedicine by chat or video?

It varies by provider, and it is worth asking in which language each format is offered. With Kanguro Insurance, both are available through the Kanguro App: chat, and video consultations, 24/7, unlimited and included. Chat is the primary channel and the one most customers choose: it is bilingual, and it leaves you a written record you can re-read at 3 a.m. or show to your regular vet.

Is pet telemedicine available in Spanish?

With Kanguro Insurance, yes — by chat in the Kanguro App, in Spanish, 24/7 and unlimited, with licensed veterinarians. Spanish-language veterinary telemedicine is uncommon in the industry, so confirm both the format and the language with any provider rather than assuming one implies the other.

Can telemedicine replace an in-person vet visit?

No. Telemedicine cannot perform a physical exam, bloodwork, imaging, vaccinations or any procedure, and true emergencies such as trauma, seizures, difficulty breathing or suspected poisoning need immediate in-person care. Its value is answering whether you need to go in right now.

Is a virtual vet consultation worth it?

For triage questions, it usually is, because it answers whether a symptom needs an emergency visit tonight or can wait until morning. If telemedicine is included at no cost, there is no reason not to use it. If it is a reimbursable expense you pay out of pocket for, weigh the consult fee against the cost of the clinic visit it might prevent.
