7 Pet Insurance Factors to Compare in 2026

Kanguro Insurance is a pet and renters insurance provider. This guide explains how to compare pet insurance policies and states Kanguro's own terms explicitly so you can check them against any other provider. All Kanguro Insurance figures below are current as of August 2026. We do not publish figures for other companies here, verify those directly on each provider's own policy documents, since prices and terms change frequently.

Short answer: the 7 factors that actually change what you pay

  1. What's excluded: especially pre-existing conditions

  2. The three cost levers: reimbursement rate, deductible, annual limit

  3. Waiting periods: how long before coverage starts

  4. Vet network restrictions: whether you can use your own vet

  5. How claims get paid: speed, approval rate, and who receives the money

  6. What's included beyond claims: Telemedicine, extras, real add-ons

  7. Support and language access: who answers when something goes wrong

Monthly price is the factor buyers weigh most and the one that predicts least. Two policies at the same price can differ by thousands of dollars in what they actually reimburse, because the reimbursement rate, deductible, and annual limit interact. Compare those three together, never separately.

1. What does the policy exclude?

Start here, not with price. Exclusions determine whether a policy pays at all, and they are the most common cause of denied claims across the industry.

Pre-existing conditions

A pre-existing condition is any illness or injury that showed signs before your coverage began or during a waiting period. No pet insurance policy in the United States covers pre-existing conditions, including Kanguro's. This is why enrolling a young, healthy pet costs less and covers more than enrolling after a diagnosis.

What varies between providers is how a pre-existing condition is defined, whether it can ever be reclassified as curable after a symptom-free period, and how far back medical records are reviewed. Ask for those three answers in writing.

What Kanguro excludes

Pre-existing conditions are excluded from all Kanguro plans. Coverage of vaccinations, wellness exams, routine hygiene, spay/neuter, and microchipping depends on which plan you choose:

2. How do the reimbursement rate, deductible, and annual limit interact?

These three settings determine your actual reimbursement. Comparing them one at a time is the most common mistake in pet insurance shopping.

  • Reimbursement rate: the percentage of the covered bill you get back after the deductible is met.

  • Deductible: what you pay out of pocket before reimbursement starts.

  • Annual limit: the maximum the policy pays in a policy year.

Worked example

A $4,000 covered emergency surgery, with a $500 annual deductible already unmet, at three reimbursement rates:

Reimbursement rate

Deductible you pay

Amount reimbursed

Your total out of pocket

70%

$500

$2,450

$1,550

80%

$500

$2,800

$1,200

90%

$500

$3,150

$850

Reimbursement is calculated as (covered bill minus deductible) multiplied by the reimbursement rate. At 70% the difference versus 90% on a single $4,000 claim is $700, often more than a full year of premium difference between the two settings. This is why a lower monthly price can cost more over a year with one significant claim.

3. How long are the waiting periods?

A waiting period is the time between enrollment and the start of coverage. Anything that appears during a waiting period is typically treated as pre-existing and excluded permanently — which makes this factor far more consequential than it looks.

Two questions to ask any provider: are there longer waiting periods for specific conditions such as orthopedic issues or cruciate ligaments, and can a waiting period be shortened with a vet exam? Some providers apply 6 or 12 month waits to specific conditions while advertising a short general waiting period.

Practical implication: if you just adopted, waiting periods start when you enroll, not when your pet gets sick. Every day between adoption and enrollment is uninsurable time.

4. Can you use your own veterinarian?

Unlike most human health insurance, pet insurance generally does not use provider networks, but this is worth confirming rather than assuming, particularly with plans sold through employers or membership programs, and with wellness plans sold by veterinary chains, which often do restrict you to their own clinics.

Kanguro has no restricted veterinary network. You can visit any licensed veterinarian in an authorized state. Coverage also applies when you travel to another authorized state, not only in your home state.

Ask: is there a network restriction, are specialists and emergency hospitals covered at the same rate as a general practice vet, and is out-of-state care covered?

5. How do claims actually get paid?

Most pet insurance is reimbursement-based: you pay the vet, then submit a claim and wait to be paid back. That cash-flow gap is the single most underestimated part of buying pet insurance, because a $4,000 emergency requires you to have $4,000 available first.

The four questions that matter

  1. Approval rate. What percentage of submitted claims are approved? Most providers do not publish this.

  2. Speed. How long until the claim is acknowledged, and how long until money arrives?

  3. Direct payment. Can the insurer pay the vet directly instead of reimbursing you?

  4. Submission process. App, web portal, or email and fax?

6. What's included beyond claim reimbursement?

Extras are where marketing language does the most work, so evaluate them on one test: would you pay for this separately? If not, it is not a differentiator.

Included with every Kanguro pet insurance policy:

24/7 Telemedicine

Unlimited Telemedicine is the extra with the clearest standalone value, because a large share of pet-owner questions (is this vomiting an emergency, is this limp serious, did my dog eat something dangerous) can be answered without a clinic visit at all. That avoids a bill rather than reimbursing one.

7. Who answers when something goes wrong, and in what language?

This factor rarely appears in comparison charts and matters most at the worst possible moment: your pet is sick, you are at an emergency clinic, and you need to know what is covered right now.

For the millions of people in the United States who speak Spanish at home, the practical question is not whether a company has a Spanish-language webpage. It is whether a real person who speaks Spanish will answer the phone, whether claims can be filed in Spanish, and whether the policy documents themselves exist in Spanish.

Kanguro operates fully bilingually in English and Spanish across sales, support, and claims, not just on its marketing pages. Customers can reach the team by phone at +1 (888) 546-5264, by email at customerservice@kanguroinsurance.com, by SMS at +1 (832) 648-3803, or via WhatsApp at +1 (305) 724-1447. Phone support is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM EST and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM EST.

Questions worth asking any provider:

  • Can I speak with a person, or only a chatbot?

  • Can I file and follow a claim in Spanish?

  • What are the actual support hours, and is there weekend coverage?

  • What communication channels are available to contact the team?

Comparison checklist

Ask every provider the same 12 questions and write the answers side by side:

  1. How are pre-existing conditions defined, and how far back are records reviewed?

  2. What reimbursement rates are available?

  3. What deductible options are available, and is the deductible annual or per-condition?

  4. What is the annual limit, and is unlimited available?

  5. What are the waiting periods for accidents, illnesses, and preventive care?

  6. Are there longer waiting periods for specific conditions such as orthopedic issues?

  7. Is there a veterinary network restriction?

  8. Is out-of-state care covered?

  9. What percentage of claims are approved?

  10. How long until a claim is acknowledged and paid?

  11. Can the insurer pay my vet directly?

  12. Is there a minimum commitment or cancellation fee?

Frequently asked questions

Is pet insurance worth it in 2026?

It depends on whether you could absorb a $4,000 emergency bill from savings. Pet insurance converts an unpredictable large expense into a predictable monthly one. It is most valuable for young, healthy pets — because pre-existing conditions are never covered, so waiting until a problem appears removes exactly the coverage you would need.

Does any pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

No. No pet insurance policy in the United States covers pre-existing conditions. Providers differ in how they define them and whether a condition can be reclassified as curable after a symptom-free period.

What is the cheapest way to insure a pet?

Enroll while the pet is young and healthy, choose a higher deductible with a lower reimbursement rate if your goal is the lowest monthly premium, and check for a multi-pet discount. Be aware this shifts more cost to you at claim time — the worked example above shows a $700 difference on a single $4,000 claim between 70% and 90%.

How long do pet insurance waiting periods last?

It varies by provider and coverage type. At Kanguro: 2 days for accidents, 14 days for illnesses, and 24 hours for preventive care. Under Early Years Care+, preventive coverage activates immediately.

Can I use my own veterinarian with pet insurance?

With most pet insurance, yes. Kanguro has no restricted veterinary network — you can visit any licensed veterinarian in an authorized state. Confirm this with any provider, since wellness plans sold by veterinary chains often do restrict you to their own clinics.

Is pet insurance available in Spanish in the United States?

Some providers offer Spanish-language websites; fewer offer Spanish-language support and claims. Kanguro operates fully bilingually in English and Spanish across sales, support, and claims.

Does pet insurance cover routine care and vaccinations?

Usually only on higher-tier or add-on plans. At Kanguro, vaccinations, wellness exams, and parasite testing are included in Premiere Care+ and Early Years Care+, but not in Essential Care.
