Yes. Eligible care may include diagnostic testing, veterinary exams, specialist care, surgery, hospitalization and prescription medication.

Cancer that existed, was treated, or showed symptoms before coverage began may be considered pre-existing and excluded. Illness coverage begins after the applicable illness waiting period.

What determines whether cancer treatment is covered?

Coverage depends on:

  1. When symptoms first appeared

  2. When cancer was diagnosed

  3. Whether cancer was pre-existing

  4. Whether the waiting period has passed

  5. Whether treatment is medically necessary

  6. Your reimbursement percentage

  7. Your deductible

  8. Your annual limit

  9. Applicable policy exclusions and limitations

What a cancer claim can actually include

Cancer treatment is rarely a single veterinary bill.

A claim may involve:

Diagnosis → specialist consultation → treatment → hospitalization → medication → follow-up care

Eligible care can include:

  • Veterinary examination

  • Emergency veterinary care

  • Specialty veterinary care

  • Blood tests

  • Urinalysis

  • CT scans

  • Ultrasound

  • Biopsy

  • Surgery

  • Hospitalization

  • Prescription medication

  • Cancer treatments

Coverage depends on the applicable policy terms.

Does pet insurance cover chemotherapy?

Cancer treatment may be eligible when it is medically necessary to treat a covered cancer condition and otherwise meets the policy requirements.

Specific treatment eligibility should always be confirmed against your policy.

Does pet insurance cover cancer surgery?

Kanguro's Essential Care policy lists cancer treatments and surgery among covered procedures, subject to the policy's conditions, limitations and exclusions.

Breeds with elevated cancer risk

Cancer can affect any dog or cat, but certain breeds have higher reported rates of particular cancers.

Breeds commonly associated with elevated cancer risk include:

  • Golden Retrievers

  • Bernese Mountain Dogs

  • Boxers

  • Rottweilers

  • Flat-Coated Retrievers

Breed does not automatically determine whether cancer is covered. It can, however, be one factor when considering your pet's potential veterinary needs.

This is where the annual limit matters

Cancer can involve treatment over an extended period within a single policy year.

Kanguro offers annual limits ranging from $5,000 to unlimited, subject to the policy.

The right limit depends on your budget, your pet's age and breed, your risk tolerance and how much financial protection you want.

Example

A lower annual limit may provide meaningful protection against smaller veterinary expenses but can be reached sooner during an expensive treatment plan.

A higher or unlimited annual limit can provide more room for eligible treatment during the policy period.

Direct Pay can matter when veterinary bills are large

For eligible invoices over $900, Kanguro can pay the veterinary clinic directly, subject to the applicable requirements.

This can reduce the amount a pet parent needs to pay upfront for an eligible large veterinary bill.

What this means in real life

Scenario 1 — Potentially covered

Your dog has no previous cancer history. After the applicable waiting period, your veterinarian finds a suspicious mass and begins diagnostic testing.

Scenario 2 — Pre-existing

Your dog was diagnosed with cancer before enrollment.

That cancer would be considered pre-existing and excluded.

Scenario 3 — Unrelated condition

Your pet has a pre-existing cancer exclusion but later develops an unrelated covered illness.

The cancer exclusion does not automatically exclude unrelated future conditions.

When does coverage start?

Policy starts → 2-day accident waiting period → 14-day illness waiting period → eligible new conditions may be covered.

Waiting-period waivers may apply in qualifying circumstances.
